How the OWGR are calculated…

The Official World Golf Rankings were first launched in 1986 and are a points based system used to rank the world’s best golfers.

The points are calculated based on a golfer’s performances in tournaments during a rolling two year period. The accrued points during that period are divided by the number of events played to come up with a ranking total.

The rankings are updated each week following the leading events played on the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and other satellite tours and regional tours across the world.

In total, more than 400 tournaments each year carry world rankings points across 23 different tours worldwide.

Each weekly tournament carries an allocated number of points which are then distributed between the players in the field.

The rankings are used to determine entry into the four majors – the Masters, USPGA Championship, US Open and Open Championship – as well as World Golf Championship events.

There is an automatic place in those tournaments for the top 50 players in the world rankings, with the top 100 gaining a place in the USPGA Championship and top 60 into the US Open.
