The event has been a part the PGA Tour since first debuting in 1946 with Ben Hogan winning the first two editions and five in total, and is one of only five invitational tournaments on the tour.

The Charles Schwab Challenge is played at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, and is one of the most prestigious on the tour as it follows the USPGA Championship on the calendar.

Jason Kokrak is the defending champion having become the most recent winning of the event in 2021.

The tournament has previously been known as the Colonial National Invitational, Southwestern Bell Colonial, MasterCard Colonial, Bank of America Colonial, Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, Dean & DeLuca Invitational, Fort Worth Invitational and since 2019 as the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Former winners of the event include Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Ben Crenshaw, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Price, Tom Watson, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose.

Charles Schwab Challenge will be played over four rounds / 72 holes at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, with a cut after the opening two rounds.

The tournament carries a total prize fund of $8,400,000 USD.
