Boston Common Golf Claim First TGL Win In Season 2 Opener

Rory McIlroy TGL Boston Common

Boston Common Golf claimed the team’s first-ever TGL victory on January 2 with a tight 7-5 win over Los Angeles Golf Club in their season 2 opener.

In a tight, momentum-swinging contest under the lights at the SoFi Center, Boston Common broke their duck having ended winless in the inaugural season last year.

The 7–5 win gave TGL co-founder Rory McIlroy his long-awaited first team triumph in the league and pushed Boston into an early share of top spot in the new season.

Boston Common Golf TGL Drought Over

In the second match of TGL’s 2026 season, it was LAGC who drew first blood by taking the opening hole on the Alpine virtual layout for a 1–0 lead.

Boston answered quickly on the next hole to level the match 1-1, only for a missed putt from Keegan Bradley at Fallen Pine to hand LA back the advantage at 2-1.

The middle stretch turned into a grind, with the sides halving holes and Los Angeles, with a strong line-up of Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala, clinging to its narrow edge as they moved through Set In Stone.

Momentum finally flipped when Michael Thorbjornsen, making his TGL debut as an alternative in the Boston Commons line-up along side McIlroy and Keegan Bradley, navigated the cliff-lined Stinger hole superbly to square things up at 2-2.

From there Boston’s depth told, with Thorbjornsen delivering the decisive blows in singles – first burying a 17‑foot putt to take the lead with three holes to play and later rolling in a 15‑foot eagle to seal the franchise’s historic first win in TGL.

The Boston victory snapped the frustration of an 0‑4‑1 inaugural campaign and immediately pushed the club into a share of first place alongside defending champions Atlanta Drive in the early SoFi Cup standings.

Boston’s win was particularly notable given it came without regular stalwarts Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama.
