Motor City Golf Club Announced As New TGL Franchise For 2027 (Backed By NFL Powerhouses)

Motor City Golf Club TGL

The TGL league will expand to seven teams in 2027 following the announcement of Motor City Golf Club (MCGC) joining as a Detroit franchise.

The new team will debut in the league’s third season in 2027 with MCGC becoming the seventh team in TGL.

The will join Atlanta Drive Golf Club, who won the inaugural TGL in 2025, Los Angeles Golf Club, New York Golf Club, The Bay Golf Club, Boston Common Golf Club and Jupiter Links.

The team has been created by Middle West Partners, a Detroit-rooted investment group led by Michael Hamp, Peter Hamp and Kevin Kelleher.

The Hamps are no strangers to professional sports ownership as the family also co-owns the Detroit Lions in the NFL, with Sheila Hamp currently serving as the franchise’s principal owner and chairwoman.

For the TGL venture, Sheila and her husband Steve Hamp are confirmed co-owners of the new Motor City Group team.

MCGC’s ownership group is bolstered by several high-profile investors, including Rob Walton, owner of the Denver Broncos, and Jordan Rose, founder of Arizona’s Rose Law Group.

Joining them are Kit Hawkins and Vansa Chatikavanij of Present Ventures, tech investor Kal Somani, who co-owns IPL’s Rajasthan Royals, Jay Farner of Ronin Capital Partners and former CEO of Rocket Companies, and RHC Group.

Motor City Golf Club TGL Expansion Reaction

“This is a great moment for Detroit sports and a proud moment for me personally,” said Michael Hamp, who will serve as MCGC’s team governor.

“My grandfather, William Clay Ford Sr., was an avid golfer, and I believe bringing a new format of the game he loved would make him really proud.

“I’m incredibly grateful for our partners at MCGC – it’s an honor to build this team together. Detroit’s fans are the most loyal in sports, and we’re excited to represent our city in TGL and build a team that Detroit fans will be proud to support.”

TGL CEO Mike McCarley added: “Detroit is a fantastic sports town. The city has a championship legacy and Detroit fans are passionate about their teams and they’ll let you know it.

“The ownership group for Motor City Golf Club will utilize their deep ties to the community and extensive expertise as NFL team owners to forge a TGL team that embodies Detroit’s culture for sports and the region’s love of golf.

“TGL’s inaugural season generated extensive interest in its expansion process and we’re proud to welcome Motor City Golf Club and its ownership group as we build on the league’s continued momentum in the years to come.”
