The event has been a part PGA Tour since first debuting in 2003 as the Wachovia Championship.

It became the Quail Hollow Championship for two years in 2009 and 2010 before taking on its current name.

In 2022, the tournament was staged at TPC Potomac at Avanel Farm to allow Quail Hollow time to prepare for hosting the 2022 Presidents Cup.

It returned to Quail Hollow in 2023 with Wyndham Clark winning the title.

The Wells Fargo Championship will be played over four rounds / 72 holes at Quail Hollow with a cut after the opening two rounds.
