The Odyssey Red Ball putter is a mallet design featuring a unique aid that the manufacturer thinks could be revolutionary for golfers looking to improve their putting.

The Red Ball putter stands out from others in terms of looks thanks to a red ball positioned on the head, which has been introduced as an alignment aid.

Odyssey believe that the Red Ball putter could be the first “super game improvement putter” due to the technology that has gone into the design.

“I’m not sure we exactly know where it goes or how big it could be, but we think it satisfies a definite need in the marketplace,” Sean Toulon, Odyssey general manager and senior vice president at Callaway Golf, said.

“I guess there’s never really been a super game improvement putter that’s come to the marketplace, but that’s kind of what this is.”

Odyssey Red Ball Putter Design

The Odyssey Red Ball Putter has a traditional mallet shape to the head, but the idea behind the red ball is what makes it different as it breaks new design ground.

The Red Ball Putter is horse shoe in shape, even more so than normal due to the fact the curved back is hollow behind the face.

The name comes from the little red ball which sits in the sole of the putter. It is visible via what Odyssey are calling a “scope” (a hole to you and me) on the top of the putter head on a secondary design loop.

The idea behind the red ball, which contrasts perfectly with the black and white colour scheme of the putter head, is that it should be seen through the scope if you are positioned perfectly at address, with eyes over the ball.

Odyssey believe that by getting into that position where the red ball is visible through the scope, more putts should be holed due to correct alignment. There is also a traditional sight line running along the head of the putter towards the red ball too.

The design with the hollow back has also seen the MOI move to the edge of the head to ensure off centre strikes become more forgiving, and the face features the White Hot RX insert used in other models for improved sound, a softer feel and to produce a better roll on putts.

The Odyssey Red Ball putter is an interesting concept and one which could be a saviour for golfers who struggle with alignment.

The fact the presence of the red ball dictates whether or not a golfer is lined up correctly over a putt, could help cure their woes on the putting green.

Never before has a putter been designed with the intention of getting a golfer into the correct position consistently on the putting green.

The one negative is the look of the club head in which the red ball sits. The hollow horse shoe design may result in detractors who want to see a solid putter head for confidence standing over putts.
