Rocket Classic Leading Contenders

Collin Morikawa

Morikawa’s elite tee-to-green performance is well-documented and he ranked highly in strokes gained on approach and off the tee at Oakmont and the US Open.

Although his putting remains a concern – last week he lost nearly nine strokes with the flat stick, the forgiving layout at Detroit could aid a turnaround. He’s only played here once, finishing runner-up in 2023 after losing in a playoff.

If he sharpens his short game, he’s a strong contender. Expect him to contend for the title, but putting must improve to convert.

Patrick Cantlay

A past runner-up at Detroit having finished second in 2022, Cantlay has shown comfort on the North Course at Detroit Golf Club.

Coming off a T12 at the Travelers after missing the cut the week before at Oakmont, Cantlay’s ball-striking remains reliable and his precise iron play could excel on Detroit’s small greens.

If his short game clicks as expected, he’s a legitimate threat to overtake Morikawa.

Keegan Bradley

Bradley clinched a dramatic Travelers win last week with a birdie on 18 to continue a run of form that saw strong results at Memorial and PGA Championship.

He boasts a T14 best at Detroit in 2021, but his recent momentum coupled with Richmond greens and tree-lined fairways, fits his skilled ball-striking and mental composure.

While fatigue could come into play, Bradley’s clutch play and iron precision give him real top‑contender status.

Ben Griffin

Griffin has had a breakout season with two wins including most recently in the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Ranked inside the top 20 in strokes gained metrics, Griffin’s tee-to-green consistency aligns with Detroit’s layout.

Though his Detroit form includes mixed finishes like T31 and T33, his current trajectory suggests upside and if he nails approach play he could storm into contention or even grab his third win of the season.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Though not among the initial favorites, Fitzpatrick’s all-around game matches the demands of Detroit’s small greens and tree-lined holes.

While not flashing recent top finishes, Fitzpatrick’s course management and experience make him a sleeper to crack the test and potentially returning to winning ways.
