Titleist Vokey SM9 Black Wedges

Titleist Vokey SM9 Black wedges have been launched for 2023 with the sleek Jet Black model joining standard and raw versions.

The fourth generation of the Vokey wedges were first brought to the market in 2022 when the SM9s replaced the SM8 wedges as Titleist’s premium offering.

Now there is an all-black version of the wedges with the Jet Black model bringing a new look and feel to the range for 2023.

We take a look at just how attractive the black wedges are, discuss the benefits of them and if they differ from the standard SM9 wedges.

What Titleist say about the SM9 Vokey Wedges:

“Every Vokey wedge is a demonstration of two distinct realities: the precision of engineering and the artistry of craft.

“The materials and structure of SM9 wedges represent our most technologically advanced design, tuned for lower flight and higher spin.

“Great wedge play comes from shot versatility, distance control and spin. The materials and structure of SM9 wedges represent our most technologically advanced design in all three areas, tuned for precise contact, lower flight and higher spin.

“Your swing is unique and requires a unique wedge. Finding the right grind for your swing type will provide you flawless contact, so you can be prepared to hit every kind of wedge shot in all conditions.

“SM9 goes to new heights, taking the forward center of gravity (CG) and raising it even further, promoting a more controlled ball flight and solid contact. Hit it closer more often.

“SM9’s new grooves are cut to the edge to maximize spin. Each Vokey wedge is 100% inspected for utmost quality and performance, and a localized heat treatment is applied to the impact area to double the durability of the groove.”

Titleist Vokey SM9 Black Wedges Design & Features

The Jet Black SM9 wedges are identical to the chrome versions that have been on the market for more than a year.

The only difference is that the Jet Black version offers an alternative look over the ball and important has more anti-glare benefits due to the colour.

The changes that were made to the SM9 vs the SM8 Vokey Wedges were more evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

The clubhead itself is very similar to the SM8s with the familiar Vokey design including the stylish curved edges more pleasing on the eye look.

The face is once again Spin Milled and features 16 grooves to help generate even more spin than in any previous Vokey model.

As well as new grooves being cut to the edge to maximize spin, Titleist have also introduced a localised heat treatment to help enhanced the durability of the grooves and keep them performing for longer.

The lofts range from 46-60 degrees with a variety of lofts available across five different grinds – D, F, M, S and now T, which was released in 2023.

Verdict: Are the Titleist Vokey SM9 Jet Black Wedges any good?

We’ve known about the performance of the SM9 wedges for more than a year now since they were first launched and the Jet Blacks boast exactly the same performance benefits.
