In what was his 206th start on the PGA Tour, List finally broke through as he won a play-off with Will Zalatoris to claim the Farmers Insurance Open title at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California.
A final round six-under par 66 saw List finish top of the leaderboard along with Zalatoris on 15-under for the week at Torrey Pines.
The 37-year-old American birdied the first extra hole to win the play-off as Zalatoris missed an eight-footer of his own.
List had lost in a play-off to Justin Thomas in the 2018 Honda Classic in what was his only previous shot at victory on the PGA Tour.
The win moved List up to 56th in the Official World Golf Rankings from 151st place and earned him an invite to the 2022 Masters at Augusta in April.
