Sub 70 859 Driver (NEW 2025 Release Reviewed)

Sub 70 859 Golf Driver Review

The Sub 70 859 driver is new for 2025 and is the result of over three years of development – and impressive forgiveness at an affordable price is what it is about.

Brought to the market by the direct to consumer brand, Sub 70 have improved on the design of their original 849 model and improved both performance and forgiveness.

There are three models in the range – the 859, Pro and JD versions – and each feature new features and technologies for better length off the tee, accuracy and forgiveness on off-center strikes.

Sub 70 sell the driver at $399, making it a very attractive price for club golfers, and it joins the Sub 70 Pro V3 irons as a new launch for 2025.

You get plenty of performance for your buck thanks to Axis of Rotation Technology (ART), carbon fiber crown and toe area and adjustable weighting.

Sub 70 859 Driver Specs & Design

The Sub 70 859 driver series comes in three different models – the Standard 859, the 859 Pro and the 859 JD – with slight difference between each of them.

The standard model features a larger 460cc head for enhanced forgiveness and is designed for a wider range of golfers seeking forgiveness and performance.

The 859 Pro has a more compact 450cc head and appeals to better players and shot-makers who prefer a more traditional shape and more workability with this model suiting a slight fade bias.

The 859 JD driver in named after John Daly and was co-developed with the professional golfer to help him perform better on tour. It also has a 450cc clubhead and is designed for golfers with faster swing speeds.

All three models incorporate Sub 70’s new Axis Rotation Technology (ART), which is patent pending and features an innovative single face curvature design.

The curvature is based on the axis of the shaft rather than the center of the face from toe to heel with this unique approach aiming to optimize performance and forgiveness.

The face is crafted from 15-3-3-3 Beta Titanium, which offers exceptional rebound performance while staying within conforming limits, while the Moment of Inertia has been maximized for increased forgiveness and stability at impact.

The Sub 70 859 models are all crafted from a carbon fiber crown and heel area for optimal weighting, which can also be adjusted by switching the two interchangeable sole weights positioned in the heel and toe.

The 859 model is available in 9 degrees, 10.5 degrees and 12.5 degrees loft options, while the Pro and JD versions are sold in 9 degrees and 10.5 degrees. All three can be adjusted by 1.5 degrees up or down via the hosel.

Sub 70 859 Driver Review: Is It Any Good?

There’s a lot to like about the Sub 70 859, not least the price it is sold at. You get a high-performing driver at around half the cost of the major brands’ new releases.

The three models give plenty of options in terms of setup and shot style, although the JD should only really come under consideration if you boast a quick swing speed.

Sub 70 859 Driver

The 859 and the Pro are your go-to for distance and forgiveness with the latter suiting a fade stroke, and you can expect more accuracy that than provided by the original 849 model.

The introduction of the new Axis Rotation Technology is very interesting and goes against the grain with just a single face curvature. However, there’s no doubting is works very well and delivers forgiveness time after time.
