TaylorMade P770 Phantom Black Irons Specs & Design

The P770 irons have always been TaylorMade’s tour-spec model and improvements have been made to extract even more performance from the latest version.

The Phantom Black model has been added to the range for a limited time, with a PVD finish for the most elegant of looks and the same impressive performance.

The latest 2023 model had an “Intelligent Sweet Spot” added and that is also present in the Phantom model, helping to deliver consistent ball striking from across the face.

The forged 4140 steel face itself is the thinnest ever used in a P770 irons, while TaylorMade have removed offset from the long irons and made the blade length shorter than the P790 irons.

The forged hollow body design, constructed from soft 8620 carbon steel, continues to feature the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket for flexibility.

The SpeedFoam Air, which is inside the clubhead, has been made 69% less dense that the previous version of the P770s to help generate greater clubhead speeds.

Verdict: Are TaylorMade P770 Phantom Black irons any good?

In terms of performance, they are identical to the P770 irons, but the attraction of owning a limited-edition black set is part of the appeal.

The P770 irons are a high-quality performer and a great option for low-handicap or elite level performers on the course.

TaylorMade have extracted even more performance from them with some interesting tweaks and improvements in the new 2023 model.

A thinner topline, thinner face, repositioned sweet spot and lighter and shorter club head all help contribute to more ball speed, distance and forgiveness.
