Having dominated the tournament, not even a closing round of 67 was enough for outright victory for Bhatia in the Valero Texas Open.
Denny McCarthy came from six shots adrift to finish on 20-under par and force a play-off which Bhatia eventually won when playing the 18th hole once again.
The American had to overcome a shoulder injury suffered when celebrating his birdie putt on the final green to take the tournament into a sudden death-play off.
The left-handed American guaranteed his PGA Tour card for 2023/24 after winning a play-off to lift the title at the Barracuda Championship in July 2023.
Bhatia turned professional at the age of 17 and had been playing on a special temporary membership in 2023.
His only other previous win as a professional came on the Korn Ferry Tour in the 2022 The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic.
Bhatia is now ranked 34th in the Official World Golf Rankings from 87th.
