Thomas, who was already major winner having lifted the USPGA Championship in 2017, came from a record-equalling seven shots adrift at the start of the final round at Southern Hills to win.

The American’s final round three-under par saw him post a clubhouse lead of five-under to finish level with Will Zalatoris after overnight leader Mito Pereira double bogeyed the last when leading by one.

Thomas then won a three-hole play-off to lift the Wanamaker Trophy for the second time.

It was the 17th win of Thomas’ professional career and his 15th on the PGA Tour.

His first came in the 2015 CIMB Classic, which he won again in 2016, before he took the titles at the SBS Tournament of Champions, Sony Open, USPGA Championship, Dell Technologies Championship and CJ Cup in 2017.

In 2018 Thomas won The Honda Classic and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the following year was victorious in the BMW Championship and CJ Cup for the second time.

Thomas also won the Sentry Tournament of Champions again in 2020 and followed up a second win at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. His only title in 2021 was a big one, coming in The Players Championship.

The latest victory moved Thomas back into the world top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
