TaylorMade Spider GT Putter Review

TaylorMade Spider GT Putter

The TaylorMade Spider GT putter is new for 2022 and a new look on the hugely popular range. What can we expect from the newest Spider putter?

The new putter is part of the Spider GT series and also includes the Spider GT Notchback, Spider GT Rollback and Spider GT Splitback.

In the GT putter, TaylorMade have taken the familiar Spider design and given it a contemporary look with wings added in a mallet for the first time.

What TaylorMade says about the Spider GT putter:

“Spider GT sets a new standard in terms of performance and contemporary construction.

“The modern wing design has sharp angular features and extreme perimeter weighting for optimal forgiveness and roll. So, no matter how you look at it, it’s stability from every angle.

“This is the first Spider to feature an open frame multi-material design. Two steel side wings (90g each) push 82% of the putter’s total weight to the perimeter, allowing Spider GT to remain extremely stable on off-center strikes.

“The most striking feature of Spider GT is the ultra-lightweight top plate, which complements the perimeter-weighted construction. It is crafted from anodized aluminum for both a premium look and increased durability compared to paint or PVD finishes.”

TaylorMade Spider GT Putter Design & Features

The Spider GT builds on the impressive performance of the existing Spiders, but with a new look and the first of the series to an open frame multi-material design.

The GT is the first to have wings in place of weights, although each of them come in at 90g each for a similar balanced effect. The design decision means that 82% of the weight is now located in the perimeter for enhanced stability.

The second generation of TaylorMade’s Pure Roll insert is once again part of the Spider for more forward roll.

The Spider GT has an ultra-lightweight top place made from anodised aluminium. It not only provides a pleasing look over putts, but also much more durability on the painted finish.

The putter is available in silver, red, black and white colour options with three hosel styles to choose from to suit your putting stroke.

The small slant hosel suits players with moderate face rotation when putting, the single bend hosel helps keep the face square for a straight back and through and the centre shafted hosel is face balanced.

Verdict: Is the Spider GT putter any good?

TaylorMade have taken the original Spider design, the futuristic look of which wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and made a largely more traditional mallet shape.

All the clever weighting of the Spider range is still present, but the wing design of the GT gives it much greater appeal from an aesthetic point of view.

Performance-wise, the stability of the Spider putters is very much retained and the finish has been improved too. If you add the GT to your bag, it will be in there for quite some time.
