The American Express is the first PGA Tour event of 2026 to take place on mainland United States and is part of the early season “West Coast Swing”.
It takes place across three courses at La Quinta Country Club, the PGA West Stadium Course and the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course with a pro-am format.
Rounds are played at each of the three courses before those making the cut play the final round at La Quinta Country Club in California on Sunday.
The event dates back to 1960 when known as the Palm Springs Classic. It has subsequently been known as the CareerBuilder Challenge, Bob Hope Desert Classic, Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and the Humana Challenge.
Sepp Straka is the reigning champion having won the title in 2025, with a top class field of contenders attempting to follow in his footsteps.
Other former winners include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Corey Pavin, Jay Haas, Tom Kite, Fred Couples, David Duval, Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir, Patrick Reed, Si Woo Kim, Hudson Swafford and Jon Rahm and Nick Dunlap.

The American Express Golf Format & Schedule
The American Express will be played over four rounds / 72 holes across three different courses.
Players rotate around La Quinta Country Club, PGA West Stadium Course and PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course for the first three days.
La Quinta then hosts the post-cut final round on Sunday.

The American Express tournament carries a prize fund of $9,200,000 USD, up from $8,800,000 in 2025.
