Rory McIlroy returned to the world number one spot after successfully defending his CJ Cup title in October 2022. A look at Rory McIlroy: What’s In The Bag.

McIlroy held off Kurt Kitayama by a shot at Conagree Golf Club to claim the CJ Cup title for the second year in a row.

The Northern Irishman’s four-under par final round saw him finish on 17-under par and a shot clear of the field. It was a win that moved him above Scottie Scheffler at the top of the OWGR rankings.

It was McIlroy’s 23rd PGA Tour victory and the 35th of his career, as well as being his third title of 2022 following victories in the Canadian Open and Tour Championship.

McIlroy successfully defended the Canadian Open title in June with a two-shot victory over Tony Finau at St George’s Golf Course and then became the first three-time winner of the Tour Championship in August as he won the $20 million FedEx Cup Series finale at East Lake.

McIlroy now has 35 career victories including his four majors at the 2011 US Open, 2012 and 2014 USPGA Championship and the 2014 Open Championship.

The Northern Irishman has won DP World Tour titles in the 2009 and 2015 Dubai Desert Classic, 2011 UBS Hong Kong Open, 2012 and 2015 DP World Tour Championship, 2014 BMW PGA Championship and 2016 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

The PGA Tour victories have come in the 2010 Quail Hollow Championship, 2012 The Honda Classic, 2012 and 2016 Deutsche Bank Championship, 2012 BMW Championship, 2014 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, 2015 WGC-Cadillac Match Play, 2015 and 2021 Wells Fargo Championship, 2016, 2019 and 2022 Tour Championship, 2018 Arnold Palmer Invitational, 2019 The Players Championship, 2019 and 2022 RBC Canadian Open, 2019 WGC-HSBC Champions and 2021 CJ Cup.

Victory in the CJ Cup saw McIlroy moved back up to world number one status in the current Official World Golf Rankings.
